Country Music Has Always Had a Difficult Relationship With The LGBTQ+ Community

Within the music community, there’s a lot of different types of music genres.  Everyone has their favorite genre.  Something to turn on while working, cleaning, gaming, or whatever.  Music brings emotions.  It can bring happiness, sadness, anger, and anything in between. That’s one of the most beautiful things about music is bringing people together.  One of the genres of music that I personally adore is country music.

I know some people are going to roll their eyes and say, really? Country music? The genre music that talks about Jesus, drinking, fishing, and normally about a guy losing a girl. Yes. I will admit that there are a lot of songs that have those themes in it.  However, one of the reasons why I love country music is the soul of it.  Each country song tells a story regardless of what the song is.  That is what makes country music such a beautiful genre of music.

However, there are cautions that I have as a trans and queer person.  As a lot of country artists believe in marriage between a man and woman, pro-life, MAGA ideologists, and a lot of other things that are not very inviting for people of the LGBTQ+ community.  Which is a huge problem for individuals like me who grew up with country music and want to continue to support the genre.  It’s even worse for individuals who live in states where country music is the most popular genre of music.  Trust me, I used to live in Oklahoma for a year.  Country music is incredibly popular there.

As such, I felt like I had to distance myself from a music genre that I grew up with and still loved for my own protection.  However, today March 20, 2026, a new queer country band has entered the chat to change that narrative.  This new band is called The Cowgays.

So, a queer country band? Those are two terms that don’t go together normally.  However, The Cowgays are here to change that narrative.  How is their first song pushing this change? Let’s find out together.  In this episode of Sparky Reviews, we’re going to be discussing The Cowgays and their new song, “Wish I Wasn’t Gay”.

Firstly, Who are The Cowgays?

So, who are The Cowgays?  The Cowgays are a new queer country band created by fellow LGBTQ country music artists including Brooke Eden, Chris Housman, and Adam Mac.  One of the things that I love about this trio is their all the song writers bring so much soul and a genuine feeling of just wanting to belong.  Which is such a breath of fresh air for this genre of music.  Since there have been a few country songs that have brought topics of Drag Queens, Women marrying each other, and other topics that some country listeners might call blasphemy.

However, The Cowgays push all of the buttons in such a beautiful way to make that change.  This is done through their song “Wish I Wasn’t Gay”.

Wish I Wasn’t Gay Brings So Much to the Table

“Wish I Wasn’t Gay” is the first single of The Cowgays and it does everything a first single needs to do and even more.  At the first note, the trio does an absolutely gorgeous harmony. Highlighting the power and voices of each of the members.  There isn’t one point in the song where I thought anyone was too strong.

As soon as the harmony is over, each of the singers play their own part in the song.  One of the things that I adore about this song is the twang of the song.  Yes, this is a term.  Since country music uses instruments that create a swing or a way to dance. Instruments like banjos, drums, guitars, base guitars, violins, and other instruments that make you just want to get up and dance.  Honestly, “Wish I Wasn’t Gay” reminds me of Alan Jackson, Brad Paisley, and Randy Travis in the 90s.

One of the other things I love about this song is the lyrics.  The lyric before the chorus is what happens to so many people who discover they’re apart of the LGBTQ+ community.  That egg cracking moment or discovery, the denial process, turning to a trusted person to only be turned away to say you’re going to hell, and finally finding your chosen family or those who will accept you for who you are.

These are just a few experiences some LGBTQ+ have experienced.  Sometimes they are much worse or better, the point is that everyone has an experience.  Which is what “Wish I Wasn’t Gay” discusses.  It’s such a beautiful timeline of what many LGBTQ+ people experience.

Which as a queer person, this song is SUCH a breath of fresh air because there’s a band who is willing to talk about the struggles and stories of the LGBTQ+ community. Particularly those who live in environments whose country music is much more prevalent than other music genres.

Plus, “Wish I Wasn’t Gay”, is just a beautiful song.  Anyone can play it at a barbeque, working, or chilling with a few friends with a few beers.  As I’m even writing this review, I can safely say my Apple Music is utterly destroyed because I’ve listened to this song…A LOT…and I have no regrets.
