There Was One Game That Defined the Transition for 2D to 3D Videogames

Within the video game industry, there was a time when eight bit, sixteen bits, and even companies exploring thirty-two bit were the standard. From the original Super Mario Brothers to Sonic 3 & Knuckles, these games ruled the gaming market.  With each game that came out, the games pushed what the consoles could do.  Then after many years of waiting, the transition of 3D animation video games were coming.

According to the official PlayStation website under the article, “Evolution of PlayStation: The Beginning.” PlayStation explains that “on December 3, 1994, Sony changed the gaming world with the release of the PlayStation 1” (3). Released first in Japan to eventually be released to the rest of the world, the world of video games stepped into the world of 3D animation.

With Sony making the step into the future, the world turned to the ruling company, Nintendo.  According to the official Nintendo of Europe’s official website under the article, “Nintendo History”, Nintendo states that “on June 23, 2026, Nintendo answered the gaming world with the Nintendo 64” (7).  When the Nintendo 64 came out, a lot of people were excited about the transition from 2D to 3D animation.

As someone who remembers when the Nintendo 64 was live and active, it was a time to be a gamer.  There were many games that different companies were trying to make.  Additionally, there were a lot of franchises that were trying to make the jump from

Some were incredibly bad and some were incredibly well done.  However, there was one game that revolutionized the transition from sixteen bit to 3D animation was the one and only, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Yes, I’m aware that this trailer is for the remake for the Nintendo 3DS.  However, you get the idea of the game since media during the Nintendo 64 era are incredibly hard to find now a days.  Essentially, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time follows a boy aka the player named Link who with the help of Princess Zelda goes off to stop the evil Ganondorf from taking over Hyrule.  Seems like a pretty simple premise for a video game in my opinion.

However, what makes this game quite the challenge is the various dungeons, side quests, and characters the players meet along the way.  Sure, the game has a linear pathway, and you can follow it to a tee if you desire.  However, if you do just the main path, you’ll miss out on various item upgrades and more importantly, heart pieces which are your health in this video game.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time really encourages players to explore the world of Hyrule and to see how Ganondorf’s influence has really contributed to the corruption of the world.  It’s up to the player to uncorrupt the world that Ganondorf has taken over and to save Hyrule from the powers of darkness.

To say that this game revolutionized the gaming industry is an understatement.  If you were to ask anyone regardless of if they are a gamer or not, do you know The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time? Nine times out of ten, people will say either “oh I love that game” or “I used to play that game all the time when I was younger”.

I can guarantee that most of the reasons why people bought a Nintendo 64 was for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.  This game was so many gamers’ introduction to The Legend of Zelda series.  Additionally, Ocarina of Time introduced of peoples introduction to video games.  Every console that has come out has either gotten a remaster, rerelease through the virtual console, or a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

With the Nintendo Switch 2, many people were thinking that this console gamers would get just a simple rerelease of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on the Nintendo Switch Online.  Especially since Nintendo for the past almost ten years has been focusing on the newest installment of The Legend of Zelda series, The Legend of Zelda: Breathe of the Wild.  Which means that every game coming out lately has been within the Breathe of the Wild series.

This change is normal from time to time.  In order to ensure that a series has a breathe of fresh air.  However, gamers like myself who haven’t liked The Breathe of the Wild series are extremely burnt out on the style The Legend of Zelda has taken.

However, with the winds of Grand Theft Auto VI coming out this November, video game companies have been scrambling to make sure they don’t get bulldozed by the most anticipated game of the year by not releasing games in November.  However, on June 9, 2026, Nintendo during their latest Nintendo Direct dropped a massive bombshell as their last announcement that has the potential to compete with Grand Theft Auto VI.

It’s true.  The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is getting a complete remake on the Nintendo Switch 2.  What does this teaser have to offer? Does The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time have what it takes to compete with Grand Theft Auto Six? Let’s find out together.  In this episode of Sparky Reviews, we’re going to be discussing and analyzing the newest The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time trailer and how this game has the chance to compete against Grand Theft Auto VI.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Is Showing Off The Power of the Nintendo Switch 2

One of the things that I adore about this trailer is that it’s showing off the power of the Nintendo Switch 2.  For the last few years, the Nintendo Switch 2 has been slowly introducing modern games.  Some of these games include Cyberpunk 2077, Orbitals, and Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen.

At first, some people might think “well yeah. This is the standard for consoles to have these high powerful games”.  Sure.  However, for Nintendo, the Nintendo Switch 2 is first console to run at sixty frames per second at 4K resolution.  To be frank, Nintendo has always struggled to be up to date on video game standards.

However, the Nintendo Switch 2 was the final step for Nintendo to be a modern console.  With the new Ocarina of Time, we see this power in the end of the trailer.  The last part of the trailer is the beginning of the game.  However, the graphics are so beyond gorgeous.  Being able to see this level of graphics on a Nintendo console is incredible.  So, what about this game is going to beat one of the most anticipated game of the year? Well, it’s because people have lost hope in Rockstar Games and in Grand Theft Auto VI

Rockstar Games Has Lost the Hope and Trust of a Lot of People Instead of Being Honest and Real with the Gaming Community like The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

One of the double-edge swords about franchise is expectations.  One of the main franchises in Rockstar Games is the Grand Theft Auto series.  Sure, there have been some games that have come out to tie gamers over.  However, the focus of Rockstar Games is and has always been the Grand Theft Auto series.  Then in 2013, a new Grand Theft Auto game was released that changed the gaming industry.  This game was Grand Theft Auto V.

Talk to anyone who’s own a PlayStation 3, X-Box 360, PlayStation 4, X-Box Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC, GTA V will come up.  In fact, some people still play Grand Theft Auto V to this day in 2026.  GTA V won countless awards and was a staple during the PlayStation 3 and X-Box 360 scene.

So obviously, the public was waiting for a new Grand Theft Auto game.  Years passed and no news was coming out.  Then in 2023, a miracle happened.  A brand new, absolutely gorgeous trailer came out announcing Grand Theft Auto VI

After this trailer, obviously fans and non-fans of Grand Theft Auto VI were exploding with excitement.  This game was the push for a lot of people to finally make the transition from PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5 and X-Box Series X/S.  Then suddenly, Rockstar Games became radio silent.  Game shows, Company directs, and massive conventions like New York Comic Con came and went but no word from Rockstar.  Then, slowly, release dates kept getting pushed back.

Rockstar Games had made all of these huge promises that the next Grand Theft Auto game was going to be the best in the entire franchise.  However, the constant silence, release date being pushed back, and the lack of communication really built a wall of distrust.

Now, delayed projects happen all the time in the video game industry. Sure, it can be frustrating but it’s better for a company to fully complete a game instead of rushing it out.  However, if a game is too delayed, that can be an issue too.  Since this can cause fans to float to other franchises or even lose hope all together.

Which is what I feel that Nintendo did so well with this announcement.  There was a gap in The Legend of Zelda franchise.  They focused on other series to focus their main time on making the game.  It felt honest and what a gaming company should do.

Now, I’m not a complete Nintendo fanboy.  There have been times that I’ve disagreed with what they decided to do.  However, I feel that this decision to keep Ocarina of Time a secret until it’s only a few months away was a brilliant move.

This way, gamers know that it’s been in development for a while and now that it’s coming out soon, we get to experience the months leading up to the release of the project.  Not just waiting until maybe Rockstar Games will release a game that seems like a myth at this point.  This is why I truly believe that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time has a great change to be the game that can go up against the powerhouse that is Rockstar Games and Grand Theft Auto VI.
