Horror Films Target the Theme of What Ifs
One of the things that is very prevalent in horror films is the concept of “what if”. What if a seemingly innocent clown starts targeting random people and brutally kill them? What if a group of exotic spiders get out in an apartment building and start acting on their instinct infecting the building? What if a man-eating shark finds a beach during a holiday weekend and started feasting? These are just a few horror films that use the concept of “what if” in their story.
Horror focuses on the everyday fears and challenges in life and turns them into monsters. This is why horror has such a divisive film genre. Since there are a lot of film viewers who hate horror, but viewers like me absolutely love horror.
Within the film genre of horror, there are several avenues of subgenres. Some of these subgenres includes insects, slashers, psychological, inanimate objects, supernatural, and paranormal. Horror is a film genre that has a large section of subgenre since this film genre focuses on audiences fears and horrors. One of the film genres that is a huge fan for some horror fans is slashers.
When I say the word slasher, I’m sure many of you thought of the most iconic slasher mascots. This includes Freddy Krueger, Jason, Art the Clown, Pennywise, and Michael Myers. Normally, a slasher categorizes as a creature chases a person or a group of people. With all of these most well-known icons, obviously other film production teams try to replicate these icons.
Some films like The Terrifier have succeeded and now Art the Clown is a horror film icon. However, more than likely, a lot of films have just tried to replicate icons with no success. However, a new film has been taking the horror film scene by storm. This new indie film is the newest comedy, slasher film, Buddy.
Heavily inspired 1990s children’s media particularly Barney the Dinosaur, Buddy follows a magical orange unicorn named Buddy and the children who interact with each other. However, one of the kids named Freddy starts to realize that things are not as innocent as they seem. Buddy was released to audience on August 28, 2026, and it’s been receiving high amounts of praise with more theaters accepting showings of this film.
What about Buddy that captivates audiences? Why is Buddy causing such a cult following that some consider Buddy to be a new horror film icon? Well, let’s find out together. In this episode of Sparky Reviews, we’re going to be thoroughly analyzing the latest horror film classic, Buddy.
Buddy Uses Audiences Genuine Uneasiness of Childhood Mascots
One of the things that makes Buddy such an enjoyable film is the use of the uneasiness of childhood mascots. At the moment, there are a lot of media that use mascots that are incredibly popular. Media like Five Nights at Freddys, Chuckie Cheese, and Barney and Friends have captured the hearts of children. Adults on the other hand, see the genuine uncanny valley of the mascots and think they’re creepy.
So, what better way to unlay that uneasiness with a film like Buddy. The character Buddy seems to be a happy, carefree, and trustable character. However, little elements seep through to show that not everything is happy about this place.
One of the things that this film does so incredibly well is to dive more the genuine uneasiness of childhood mascots. Which is where Buddy really excels in is the deep dive into its characters and its main villain.
Buddy and Its Cast of Characters are So Enjoyable and Interesting to Watch
Within horror films, sometimes the characters get pushed to the side. This is not the case for Buddy. Like I stated before, Buddy dives more into the genuine uneasiness of childhood mascots. The reason why Buddy is creating such a huge following is all of the characters.
Buddy is very much a character driven story. Which is unusual for a horror film since many slasher films focus more on the violence of the film. Now, Buddy is incredibly violent there’s no doubt about that. Additionally, there are some scenes that are incredibly unsettling to audiences, particularly one with Buddy and the nurse without going into particular spoilers on this scene.
With that said, Buddy’s character is interesting and grab audiences’ attention with how the universe was originally built. I know I’m being incredibly vague. However, I feel like I need to be since any little thing will ruin the vibe of this film. As a result, this is how I need to address the context of Buddy. However, trust me when I say that the characters are the pushing force for this film much like the suspense of Buddy.
