Horror Films Like to Pull on Viewers Fears
Within storytelling, writers will use different elements to attract audiences. Many writers will use their own experiences, the strengths of mankind, and other things. However, one of the things that writers love to do is pull from fear.
This is exactly what horror stories do. They pull from the fears of everyday people turn them into stories. Most of the most popular horror monsters are from made from fears of everyday people. Terrifier and IT pull inspiration from the fear of clowns. Chuckie and Annabelle pull inspiration from the fear of dolls. Every single popular horror franchise pulls from inspiration from the average person’s fear. One of the fears that is used a lot in horror films is spiders.
Think about it. The little creatures that hide in your closets, basements, and in the corner of your room. They crawl in the night and sometimes crawl on you when you least expect it. Some people love them even to the point of keeping them as pets. However, a lot of people have extreme fear to the point of having Arachnophobia. So of course, horror film producers want to make films about spiders. Then in April of this year, a new horror film by well renown horror film makers Roadside Attractions and Saban Films came out with an announcement of a new film named Crawlers.
So, at first glance, Crawlers just looks like an average run of the mill horror film. Crawlers is about a group of deadly poisonous spiders infecting an apartment building and the tenants inside must survive. However, the thing that honestly makes the film interesting is fact that this film is made by the same producer of the John Wick film. This film also raises a lot of story questions about how will the tenants survive? What do they have to do in order to survive when the government closes the entire building? That’s what we’re here today to examine further. In this episode of Sparky Reviews, we’re going to be analyzing the newest spider horror film, Crawlers.
Crawlers Brings the Fear of Spiders to the Surface While Making the Story Interesting
With this film Crawlers, the producers of the film ensured this film isn’t a run of the mill spider film. The spider actually uses a scientist who lives in the apartment building as a vessel to transport their offspring to another location.
When the scientist is found, a government organization is immediately called since they don’t know what killed him, but they know he travelled to another unknown location. As a result, the government puts the apartment building into a lockdown not knowing the killers were already in their apartments and air vents.
Crawlers is a perfect film of the concept of the killer could be anywhere. It’s even worse when the killers are anywhere between the size of a quarter, a dime, and a stapler. Which Crawlers takes full extent of ensuring that the spiders are always around. Using moments when the tenants were so close to touching the spiders which would have resulted in their immediate deaths, but they didn’t.
To which is why Crawlers ensures that the film uses the elements to keep the thrill and suspense of the film. While Crawlers does keep the creepiness element, this film will not be winning any awards.
While Crawlers Isn’t Going to be Winning Any Awards, It’s a Fun Film for the Spooky Season
While Crawlers does have elements that bring and keep the suspense of the spiders, this film is not winning any awards. It’s hard to compare horror films with each other. However, the horror film genre has been having hit after hit within the past few years.
With that said, Crawlers struggle with keeping their characters not only enjoyable but memorable. There are too many characters that are used as death counter for the spiders and while this isn’t new for monster films, it makes the characters feel pointless. Yes, some might point out that it’s to show that the monsters are getting stronger. However, there’s only three or maybe four characters that the audience truly cares about.
This isn’t to say that Crawlers is a bad film. Honestly, I thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s a great film to play during the spooky season of October or even on Halloween night while passing out candy. However, there are moments in the film that make characters incredibly forgettable and moments that made me yell at the screen at the characters to react accordingly.
All in all, I feel that Crawlers is an okay film. It’s good in creating a scary and unsettling atmosphere of a spider invasion. However, there are moments that make characters forgettable and moments that make me want to throw something at the screen. With that, I do feel that Crawlers is a perfectly fine October film to watch before Halloween or even on Halloween night. If you are a fan of spiders and unsettling film, definitely check it out.
