Video Game Films Have Gone Through Their Ups and Downs
Within the entertainment industry, adaptations have always been popular. Adaptations can range from books into film, music into film, and television shows into films. However, there’s one adaptation that film companies have tried consistently to make is videogames into film.
Unsurprisingly, film companies would want to focus on videogame film adaptations. Since video games are now one of the most popular forms of storytelling and media consuming forms of entertainment. With most of the population being exposed to computers, consoles, and even mobile games, there is a video game that is for everyone.
So, obviously, film companies want to capitalize on that form of media. However, this transition doesn’t always go well. Since video games are themselves forms of storytelling. The storytelling is done through hours, sometimes hundreds of hours of dialogue, character interaction, the world, the game design, and so much more. There’s a lot that goes into video games that can build these forms of escapism much like films. So, one can see how a film company takes a several hundred-hour game and compile it into a two-hour and some minute film seems nearly impossible.
As a compromise, some video games have transitioned very well into television shows. A perfect example of a video game adaptation that did incredibly well into television format is The Last of Us. However, most of the time, film producers will attempt to make a video game film adaptation.
With some films like the upcoming Street Fighter, The Super Mario Brothers Movie, and Sonic the Hedgehog have done incredibly well in the transition of game to films. Unfortunately, for a while, video game film adaptations were seen as a joke and not in a good way. With more film producers taking the challenge to make that transition from video game to film screen more professional. Then on September 18, 2026, a new video game film joined the running. This film is none other than the popular zombie horror franchise Resident Evil.
Now at first, I wasn’t surprised that a new Resident Evil film came out. Especially with the highly praised game release of Resident Evil: Requiem that came out February of this year. Additionally, Resident Evil is no stranger to video game film adaptation. If anything, next to Tomb Raider, Resident Evil is one franchise that has made the transition from videogame to film. Some of these films have been good, however they have reputations for being not great.
So, I’m not going to lie, I was skeptical. However, as I learned more about Resident Evil, the more I saw the potential. Does Resident Evil have a chance to change the minds of its audience that Resident Evil can have good films? Is it welcoming to both newcomers and veterans of Resident Evil? Grab your keys, make sure your gun has bullets, and let’s find out. In this episode of Sparky Reviews, we’re going to be thoroughly examining the newest film in the Resident Evil franchise, Resident Evil.
Resident Evil is a Good Film For Non-Gamers and Casual Resident Evil Fans With It’s Originality and Easy to Follow Plot
One of the things that I personally love about Resident Evil is this film is a wonderful film for anyone who doesn’t know Resident Evil or are casual Resident Evil fan. Now, I know that some of you reading this are like…well. What about current Resident Evil fans? Does it pander to Resident Evil fans? Honestly, I don’t think it does.
Resident Evil follows a medical carrier named Bryan who gets a mission to send a medical item to a place called Raccoon City. For any Resident Evil fan, you instantly know stuff always seems to happen there. However, along the way to Raccoon City, Bryan starts to see that this “mission” is not normal as without spoiling anything stuff starts happening that aren’t normal and, in some instances, try to kill him.
Honestly, this film is how I would picture a Resident Evil film to be. The story is great at what it wants to deliver. However, there’s an element that is there for the fans of the series which is another topic I will cover next. Trust me, I want to talk about it.
With that said, I do feel that Resident Evil is a wonderful film for anyone who may not be familiar with the games, who are casual Resident Evil fans, or some gamers like myself who like the series but are not fans of horror games.
I’m aware of how that sounds since I do reviews of horror films. How can I review horror films, but I’m scared to play horror games? Yes. I can say with my full chest that I have issues with horror games. This is why I choose horror films because there’s another level of watching horror and playing horror, which is what happens in video games.
Back to the topic of Resident Evil, I feel that this film brings originality while also including elements that remind the audience of this is a Resident Evil film. Now, while this film does have a wonderful door to newcomers of Resident Evil and for casual fans, fans of the series, I feel will also enjoy this film.
Resident Evil Comes With Extra Story Lore and Easter Eggs that Fans of the Series Will Enjoy
With Resident Evil being more catering to newcomers or casual fans of the franchise, rest assure, this film does not pander. If anything, Resident Evil is riddled with easter eggs, puzzles that Byran has to do that are straight out of Resident Evil games, and other story elements that fans are going to pick up on.
Also, Resident Evil is also stock packed with sarcasm that this franchise is well known for. I know some people don’t understand why this film has humor since Resident Evil is classified as a horror film. However, fans of the series will die with laughter because the games are filled with sarcasm and dark humor jokes. Some of the main characters in the series leak sarcasm like Leon Kennedy, Chis Redfield, Ada Wong, I mean HELLO??
I feel that fans of this franchise will thoroughly appreciate and enjoy Resident Evil. This film has something for everyone which is why I absolutely loved this film. I felt that Resident Evil is a wonderful film for fans, newcomers, and casual fans. It has something for everyone, and it truly is a wonderful introduction to this beloved video game franchise. On top of that, I believe that this film is one of the best Resident Evil films ever made.
