For Years, Disney Has Been the King of Animation

When someone mentions Disney, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Probably more than likely are the animated films.  For years, The Walt Disney Company was one of the most recognizable film companies within the animation industry.  Films like Snow White and The Seven Dwarves, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Frozen, and Wreck-It-Ralph to name a few of the vast film library.  Regardless of the film, Disney has been known for its film library.

With any film company, Disney has had their ups and downs.  With that said, there has been a recent decline in films coming out from Disney. Many film goers, including myself, have significantly noticed the lack of creativity and just lack of originality in the films created by The Walt Disney Company.  It’s gotten to a point where it’s causing a Disney Burnout.

What is causing this Disney Burnout? Let’s talk about it.  In this episode of Sparky Reviews, I’m going to be discussing the recent Disney Burnout and what has been happening to create it.

So, What is Causing Disney Burnout

So, what is causing Disney Burnout? Well, it’s a number of things.  Firstly, we’re going to talk about Moana.  At first, you might think wait, what about Moana, the animated film from 2016? Well, Disney has decided to release a live action version.

Over the past fifteen years, Disney has been doing back-to-back live action films of their animated films.  For the goal in mind to make money.  Sure, the creators of these films can expand on the universes with these live action films.  However, nine times out of ten, the live action Disney films are one by one recreations with some unnecessary changes.  Like for instance, changing Jumba in Lilo & Stitch as the main villain instead of Captain Gantu.

Like I said, changes are fine. However, these changes need to be made in a way that doesn’t jeopardize the integrity of the film.  So, the Moana movie.  There is nothing in this film that looks appealing.  It’s just a one for one recreation of Moana.  If I want to watch Moana, I’ll watch it on Disney+.

If this was any other time, I would just roll my eyes and say “Oh here we go. Disney is disrespecting another animated classic”. However, other animation companies are creating films that are far more fun and more importantly original than what Disney is doing

DreamWorks Is Pushing the Boundaries of Animation Causing More Disney Burnout

After the release of the trailer of Moana, two other animated studios came out with their own trailers for projects they’re working on.  These two were DreamWorks and Illumination Studios.  DreamWorks’ newest original project is Forgotten Island.  Forgotten Island follows two friends who have to escape a magical island before the portal wipes their memories of their friendship.

I’m so incredibly excited about Forgotten Island.  The premise, the story, the characters, THE ANIMATION oh my god the animation looks GORGEOUS.  There is so much about this film that I want to know more about.  Honestly, I can’t say the same thing about Disney’s newest films they’ve come out with.

There’s no originality and even if there is originality, Disney is unwilling to push any boundaries.  One of the things that was so well known about Disney films was their pushing of the boundaries of what animation is.  From the ballroom scene from Beauty and the Beast to Elsa building her castle in Frozen with Idina Menzel’s gorgeous voice awakening a new generation of fans.

This era of Disney honestly reminds me of when Disney made those straight to VHS era.  Sure, there were a couple of films that were good but most of the time, they are trash.  Films that you put in the background while you’re doing something or if you needed time to do something to keep kids distracted.

Which again, animation should not patronize audiences and be subjected to just children.  Which is unfortunately what Disney has been doing.   Look at The Super Mario Galaxy Movie that Illumination Studios is making for Super Mario fans.

Illumination Adds to the Disney Burnout Teaching That Animation Doesn’t Need to Patronize Audiences

Another film that is adding to the Disney Burnout is the new Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

Sure, there is a one thousand, million percent chance that Nintendo is giving Illumination Studios money to make The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.  So, this does mean that the animation is going to be the best of the best since Nintendo is one of the most well-known companies in the video game industry.

However, even with Nintendo’s guidance and money, Illumination Studios has made The Super Mario Movie its own entity.  The characters are flawed and relatable.  The style of the animation is so gorgeously done.  The film is a beautiful love letter to the Super Mario franchise.  It’s for all audiences.  Plus, with the way that The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is portrayed, there is a ton of opportunity for more stories to come out of this series.  Much in the same fashion as the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise that is in the process of making Sonic 4 with Amy Rose and Metal Sonic.

I see this film and I’m excited.  I see The Super Mario Galaxy film and I’m so excited about this film! Since I know that Illumination and Nintendo are not going to hold back.  They’re going to focus on giving audiences an experience they will never forget. This is what Disney has been lacking. They've been lacking focusing on what audiences want. We want unapologetic, original, and the Disney that was not afraid to push the boundaries of what storytelling is in film making.
