Pokémon is Turning Thirty Years Old and is Celebrating With a Bang

Almost thirty years ago, a new game was just coming out.  A game that would change the RPG world forever.  A little game came out from Japan named Pokémon Green and Red.  A simple game about the player catching these little creatures called Pocket Monsters, also known as Pokémon.

After the growing success of these games in Japan, an international release was completed.  Then in 1998, two of the most well-known RPGs came out to international audiences named Pokémon Red and Blue.  For thirty years, Pokémon has released movies, TV shows, video games a plenty, plushies, and mobile apps to name but a few.  If you ask anyone, they will comment on Pokémon.  Pokémon is such a worldwide phenomenon that has taken the world by storm.

So, with the thirtieth anniversary of Pokémon, there’s a lot of speculation of what will be announced.  Will we get a new generation? Will we get new merchandise? Or a silent announcement of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen.

Yep, you read that right. As of February 20, 2026, Nintendo has silently revealed that Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen are coming to the Nintendo Switch One and Two.  What does this mean? Is it just a simple port? Or is Game Freak giving us more than a simple port? Let’s find out together.  In this episode of Sparky Reviews, we’re going to be discussing Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen coming to the Nintendo Switch.

At First Glance, Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen Look Incredible

From the trailer in addition to the screenshots, Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen look amazing.  As much as I do love Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, it is a twenty-two game.  Even though the sprite animation is still gorgeous in terms of video game standards.  In fact, many fan Pokémon games have been made with the inspiration of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen sprites.

With that said, this new version looks incredible.  With the backlight as well as the higher definition of sprite detail, this game has a chance to be incredible.  Plus, this is huge to anyone who hasn’t had the chance to play the original games.  Since unfortunately both Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen are incredibly expensive even for twenty-two-year-old games.  These two games can be anywhere from fifty to five hundred dollars depending on if you want the new wireless connection that was very popular when the games originally came out.

Regardless, this game looks incredible.  Additionally, this version of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen looks like it includes the Sevii Islands.

Nintendo Switch Version of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen Include the Sevii Island

For those who are unaware, the Sevii Islands were islands in the original games where you could go and obtain rarer Pokémon.  These islands were added in the original games as new content since these two games are remakes of the original Pokémon Blue and Red.

So, what I’m wondering is if players will also get access to other legendary events.  Since in these games originally, they had special events that players had to go to either (aging myself here a little bit but, I remember these events!!) GameStop, Toys-R-Us, or Best Buy to get certain access to events.

So, my question is will we be able to access these areas to get certain legendary Pokémon or will they be inaccessible just like in the games.  Hopefully, we will be able to access some of the events as I feel that this could bring more to the games.  If Game Freak does decide to release the games like this format, giving players access to some of the events would bring more to the playability of the games.  However, Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen could honestly be one for one replication of the original games. Which isn’t bad, however, I am a little concerned about import lag.

Nintendo Switch Ports Have a Tendency of Import Lag Which Raises Concern for Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen

So, one of the concerns that I have is the import lag.  Now, I know that this game is not apart from the NSO library. Those games have had known issues with having import lag.  So much to the point where some games have an incredibly bad lag.

However, with the fact that this isn’t apart from the NSO Gameboy Advance lineup and is its own separate game makes me feel a little bit better.  This gives me the prospect that Game Freak is going to be porting it themselves.  Which when it comes to that, there’s less worry about import lag.

Now, that doesn’t mean that it might not happen.  However, the factor of this happening is significantly lower when it comes to the developer who originally made the game.
