The Horror Film Genre Is On Top of the World

The horror film genre has been at an all-time high.  With the rise of popularity of Sinners, the horror genre has had a lot more people exploring the genre.  Since for so many years, the horror genre has been a very big hit or miss.  This is due to the fact that a lot of first-time film creators create horror films.

Horror films can be easy to make, and they don’t require a lot of money.  For example, some horror films that have come out recently that have become amazing hits include Iron Lung and Terrifier.  Unfortunately, there are also films that have come out within the horror film genre that have been horrible.  However, like I said, the horror film genre has had banger after banger.  The most recent horror film banger to come out is A24’s newest film, Backrooms.

Released May 29, 2026, Backrooms is a suspenseful horror film that was originally made from a creepy photo someone had taken of an abandoned area with an endless hallway.  So, A24 decided to create an entire film based on this picture.

What does Backrooms have to offer? Why is this film causing so many people to call it a masterpiece? Let’s find out together.  In this episode of Sparky Reviews, we’re going to be thoroughly analyzing and reviewing A24’s newest film, Backrooms.

Backrooms Follows a Unique Plot Not Typical with Horror Films

So, what is Backrooms?  From the trailer, Backrooms looks like a film about a man who discovers a new backroom at his work.  So, Backrooms follows a man named Clark whose life is in complete disarray.

His wife kicked him out, he’s working an at-end job as a store manager at a failing furniture store, and sees a therapist named Mary.  One day after an electrician comes over to check a power outage in the building, Clark finds a new hidden door in the wall that takes him to the backroom.

One of the interesting things about Backrooms is the premise of the backrooms.  As Clark, his coworkers, and eventually Mary go into the backrooms, the environment constantly changes.  As if the backroom is alive and aware of who comes into its vicinity. Unlike typical horror films mantra, the “monster” isn’t a typical one.  The “monster” is the backroom.  The backroom takes pieces from the people who enter and warp them.

I truly believe that this is one of the reasons why Backrooms does so well sucking in its audience.  Backrooms doesn’t follow the typical horror film mantra.  This film makes audiences follow Clark and Mary as they find out what is in the center of the backrooms. Additionally, the backrooms changing slowly shows the backstory and the story of the characters.

I feel that while the plot and the point of the backrooms slowly exposing each of the character’s story is a huge part of why Backrooms is resonating so well.  While the plot engulfs audiences so well, the cinematography captures the instability of the backrooms.

Backrooms Uses Unique Cinematography to Capture the Feel of the Backrooms

Another way that this film really engulfs its audience is the cinematography.  At first, Backrooms uses a single camera uses. This essentially means that the camera is set in one area. This type of camera angle can cause uneasiness, claustrophobia, and emptiness.  Then once Clark realizes that the backrooms are a thing, Clark’s coworkers uses a handheld camera.

One of Clark’s coworkers uses an older camera to set the scene for the backroom.  As a note, if anyone has motion sickness, please note that Backrooms does have several scenes where a handheld camera is used as the main camera.

Anyway, I feel that the cinematography creates another unsettledness and the ominous feelings.  It’s also grainy and the visibility is incredibly low.  So, the already unsettling space that is slowly changing due to who is in the space cause much more uncomfortableness.

Sure, there are some jump scares to reiterate that Backrooms is a horror film.  However, the jump scares are also at the same time there for a reason.  The backrooms are slowly changing as more of the cast start coming through.

The cinematography causes a never-ending pull of what is going to happen next.  While at the same time, the cinematography in Backrooms horrifies audiences with what comes next the further they go into the backrooms.  Backrooms is a masterpiece by using non-linear plot points not seen in a horror film while also using unsettling camera angles in addition to different types of cameras.
