A Disney Japanese Animated Series?
Mobile apps are incredibly common. Some are apps for household appliances. Many are games that blow away the expectations of gamers. So, I have a question. What do you get if you combine Disney lore with Japanese animation? Yes. I know that this is an incredibly complex and interesting combination. Well, you get Disney’s Twisted Wonderland.
Set in a dark, twisted universe, a character gets sent to a school named Night Raven College for a particular purpose. There are seven houses that are based off seven Disney villains. The villains chosen are Scar, Queen of Hearts, Hades, Ursala, Jafar, Maleficent, and the Queen. So, this series uses inspiration from Disney villains and more. As a result, this game became incredibly popular. Then, after so much waiting, Twisted Wonderland got a fully animated series on Disney+.
What is this series about? How are the first three episodes? Let’s find out together. Today in this episode of Sparky Reviews, we’re going to be analyzing the first three episodes of Twisted Wonderland.
Episode One – Stranger Walking.
Episode One focuses on the world and is essentially the pilot of the series. The series begins with a young man named Yuken. He’s an all-around great guy, kind, and incredibly smart. During the first part of the episode, we learn more about Yuken.
When all seems to be going great for him, something happens to change everything. He gets transported to a different area. Yuken gets sent to an academy named Night Raven College. Throughout the episode we learn what this place is showing that there is much to learn and explore in this world. The characters reflect their houses and even the out of fish characters seem like they’re supposed to be there. Everything about this anime just feels excentric. Sure, this universe is chaotic. However, it feels that it’s always meant to be like this.
As the episode progresses, Twisted Wonderland makes me wonder “what is going to happen next?” As I previously stated, I’ve just recently started playing the mobile game. So, I have no idea where this series is going to end up.
Episode Two – A Dismissive Ranking
Yuken gets his bearings that he’s no longer in Japan. He gets a place to stay in a haunted house which has inspiration from The Haunted Mansion. This series uses a lot of inspirations from the world of Disney which makes for a lot of fun content.
Anyway, Yu, which is what the characters start to call him, meets students and slowly starts becoming friends with others. Yu also learns more about Grim and some of the other students. After a little fight, Crowley sends Ace, Deuce, and Yu on a mission to find a magestone with Grim hot on their tail.
One of the things that I really like about this episode is that it very much a fish out of water situation with a little bit of a twist. The audience knows that this is an anime with a dark Disney inspiration sprinkled around. Every time that I thought I knew where the episode was going, this series once again surprised me.
Episode Three– To the Enchanted Mine
In episode three, Yu, Ace, Grim, and Deuce must find a magestone. One of the interesting factors in this episode is the use of magic. Within fantasy lore universes, the use of magic is always different. As such, it’s vital for a fantasy universe to deviser how magic can be used in this universe.
As they try to find the magestone, they must learn to work together. The audience learns each of these characters’ strengths in addition to weakness. Which brings up huge character development. Not only character development is learned in this episode, but not everything is cheery in this land. I’m interested in seeing what new aspects the audience will learn about this universe and Yu’s journey to find his way home.
Twisted Wonderland is a Chaotic, Fun Adventure with More to Come
So far from the three episodes we have, Twisted Wonderland is chaotic, fun adventure. An established premise with the help of Disney inspiration in addition to an app with a large following. What does this animation have in store? I’m excited to see what comes next.
As the episodes get released in groups, I’ll make sure to review them as they come out.
