Trigger warning – PTSD and Self Isolation

Hello there.  Thank you for finding this review of Lost in Starlight.  I wanted to give a trigger warning in this review.  This review will discuss Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and self-isolation.  If this triggers you or brings up anything, please feel free to pause and save this review. Then come back and finish this.  Thank you for reading this trigger warning and enjoy the review.

Trauma Can Come in Many Forms

I want to ask a question.  Has there been an instant in your life where you’ve experienced something traumatic? A traumatic event can be anything that leaves an impact on our lives.  PTSD can come in many forms, and all the forms are valid.  Through music, video games, and especially film, trauma has been shown and integrated into all forms of media.  Recently, a new film came out that discusses love and trauma named Lost in Starlight.

In May of this year, a new Netflix featured film came out named Lost in Starlight.  Created by Climax Studios and distributed by Netflix, Lost in Starlight follows a love story between characters that assist each other through their own trauma.  How does this happen? Does this method of storytelling help bring the characters together? Let’s find out together. In this episode of Sparky Reviews, we’re going to discuss the beauty and strength of Lost in Starlight.

Love in Starlight Uses Animation to Show PTSD and Support in Partners

One of the things that I adore about this film is its talk about normalizing PTSD and closing oneself to love. Yes, this isn’t the first romance film to focus on this topic.  However, Lost in Starlight really engulfs this to show how PTSD can affect a relationship.  Firstly, let’s look at how Lost in Starlight normalizes PTSD.  Rest assured, we’ll be discussing self-isolation in the next section.

Now, Lost in Starlight focuses on the main character Nan-Young who’s an astronaut who follows in her mother’s footsteps to find life on Mars.  As she works on her pursues to her destination, she falls in love with a man named Jay after a random encounter and he sees her broken vinyl record player offering to fix it.

While this film is a romance, Lost in Starlight focuses on Joo Nan-Young and her journey through breaking through her PTSD.  Nan-Young is perfectly depicted through animation.  There are several sequences in the film where Nan-Young experiences disassociation, oppression of her emotions, avoidance, and nightmares.

At the same time, Jay also has his fair share of PTSD.  Jay is a singer who is terrified of singing after his share of trauma.  Which Nan-Young assists with him getting through his fears and vice versa.  The love and connection these two characters have is incredibly sweet while at the same time incredibly believable.  While this film shows PTSD through animation, Lost in Starlight also expresses the importance of working through self-isolation to find love.

Working through Self-Isolation and Avoidance to Love in Lost in Starlight

Within Lost in Starlight, one of the main storylines is to work through self-isolation and avoidance finding love.  With Nan-Young’s storyline, her story focuses on self-isolation.  After so many years of focusing on her work, she neglected to open herself up to love.

This is incredibly common for anyone who’s experienced a traumatic event.  This is especially apparent with Nan-Young.  For the first part of the film, it’s visible that Nan-Young has become obsessed with her mission to find life on Mars.  Even her friends and commander even reference this.  However, through Jay she learns to be more open about herself.

Then with Jay, his story focuses on avoidance.  He loves singing but avoids his singing talents after his own trauma.  Just as Jay helps Nan-young, Nan-young helps Jay to stand for what he loves and what he believes in.  Again, this film does an incredible job in these two characters helping each other out through their struggles and challenges.

Final thoughts about Lost in Starlight

From what I’ve discussed, Lost in Starlight is a beautiful film.  If you have a Netflix account or know someone who has one, please watch this film.  Lost in Starlight focuses on finding love, opening oneself to others, PTSD, and working through avoidance.
